Panel text in Dutch

Many musicians and composers struggle with music and rights issues from time to time. What are copyright laws? What are neighbouring rights? Who should be registered at Buma/Stemra? Do I get money for live shows from Sena? When do I benefit from being a member of NORMA? To answer these questions and more, these 3 Dutch rights associations present Music Rights on Tour. At New Music Conference they are joined by ‘performing composer’ Rembrandt Frerichs, who is equally at home in the realms of jazz and classical music. To quote his website: ‘Strong personalities embrace Rembrandt’s contemporary way of working with classical structures as a challenge to get out of their comfort zone. Among them are Liza Ferschtman and Rick Stotijn (Netherlands), Kian Soltani, Mahan Esfahani and Dominic Seldis (United Kingdom).
Classical ensembles invite Rembrandt for compositions or collaboration, such as Holland Baroque, Amsterdam Sinfonietta, Netherlands Chamber Orchestra, Cello Octet Amsterdam, New European Ensemble and the Cello Biennale. Musicians of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra have commissioned a piano concerto that premiered in 2021.

Hosting the talk is artist manager and music rights connaisseur Martijn Crama. Through sidenotes, Buma/Stemra, NORMA and Sena will provide information about their organizations and the neighbouring and author rights. This panel is for everyone who would like to know all about music rights and is eager to learn how not to leave their hard-earned money lying around.

Rembrandt Frerichs (performing composer, NL). Rembrandt is professor Jazz piano at the Conservatory of Utrecht. As a guest teacher he regularly works with new generations at the conservatories of Padova (Italy), and Rotterdam, Groningen, Amsterdam and Den Haag in the Netherlands. Many of his compositions have been used for TV documentaries and theatre plays. Rembrandt plays a Chris Maene fortepiano especially built for him by and on very kind loan from the Dutch Musical Instruments Foundation.

Silvia Biemans (accountmanager relations, Sena, NL). Sena manages the rights of artists and producers. These rightsholders receive payment when their music is played in public, thanks to the music-licenses that companies and organizations buy from Sena.
Silvia has been working as an Accountmanager Relationship Management at Sena since 2017. Within this position, Silvia is responsible for maintaining contact with key accounts and rightholders. She also travels through the Netherlands (online & physically) to clear up questions about Sena from and for (future?) rightsholders. You can find Silvia at mostly all national events, but also smaller events and giving masterclasses at schools & universities. Do you have a question about neighboring rights at home or abroad? Do not hesitate to contact Silvia!

Esther Maijer (manager customer care, Buma/Stemra, NL). Buma/Stemra licenses and collects the copyrights of over 30,000 composers, lyricists and music publishers. For music that can be listened to on radio, TV, at events, online music services, in the hospitality industry and much more, they receive a fee for the use of their work. Esther’s career has been set within the music industry from the beginning. As a Customer Care manager, she is responsible for contacts with rights holders and for service provision. Do you have questions about how you as a composer, lyricist or music publisher can find your way within copyright? Esther is happy to answer them.

Martijn Crama (artist management, music consultant, NL)

Music Rights on Tour, met Rembrandt Frerichs

Gespreksleider is muziekrechtenkenner Martijn Crama.
