Panel text in Dutch

During New Music Conference, we will go into great depth with some talks. But to get started, we would like to hear from two prominent people what their life as a composer in the Netherlands looks like in 2022. Martijn Padding and Anne-Maartje Lemereis represent two generations, in age, education and vision. With interviewer Maite Hontelé, they talk about music education, among other things. Not so much to hear that it is dreadful that that has become so undervalued in the Netherlands, but because they themselves deal with pupils and students almost every day. What does that do to their inspiration and work, how do they see the future of new music in the Netherlands?

Martijn Padding (Amsterdam, 1956) is a Dutch composer and educator. His music is performed both in the Netherlands and abroad. He was taught by Louis Andriessen (composition), Geert van Keulen (instrumentation) and Fania Chapiro (piano). He also studied sonology at the University of Utrecht. He is the head of the Composition Department at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague and has taught music in Ghana. Padding has made radio documentaries, and was the longtime piano accompanist of the modern dance company led by Krisztina de Châtel.

Padding writes compositions for solo instruments with ensemble and for large-scale symphony orchestra. He also creates musical theatre pieces and music for operas. He combines elements from contemporary music, pop music and culture, and traditional classical music. His compositions are often the result of a close working relationship with the musicians themselves.

Anne-Maartje Lemereis (Amsterdam, 1989) wrote her first composition when she was four years old and never stopped. She studied composition at the Utrechts Conservatorium and currently works as a composer, pianist, teacher and organiser. As a pianist, she specialised in playing contemporary repertoire. She regularly appears on stage with her own work and enjoys working with other musicians.

Anne-Maartje is a teacher and mentor at the Utrecht Conservatorium. Together with composer Remy Alexander, she also teaches composition to children aged 4 and up through Stichting In de Knop. She established this foundation to offer composition education to children and young people throughout the country and to support young composers in creating their own work.
